Please look at the latest video I've made showing the progress I've accomplished over the last one and a half years.
Ethos is slowly but surely coming together.
5th June 2013
It's been over a year since I last updated this website, so apologies to anyone who checks back regularly. As you can imagine I've been incredibly busy during that period, building nearly everyday, learning new skills whilst also trying to learn more Thai. I've now been living on the land for over 2 years and over the next few months I'll be redesigning and rewriting this website. I'll be adding lots of new photos and videos and will be trying to put it together in a more coherent manner, so please check back soon.....
31st March 2012
I've now nearly finished the first beach hut (no toilet or shower yet though!) and decided to move in about a week ago. It has been the most amazing week and I have loved ever minute of staying here. Especially waking up to the sound of the ocean gently lapping against the shore and the incredible sun rises and view you have whilst looking out over the bay here. Pictures will be put up shortly of all the progress I have made. Electricity and water are now also done and things are really starting to progress well. I'm also thinking about creating a Facebook page for Ethos so anyone who is interested can follow more closely what is happening here. A new video of me and some of my ideas on Ethos will be posted shortly as a good friend of mine has just been the first guest to come here to stay and he's a director/producer. I'm very excited to see how it will turn out.
31st January 2012
After a very stormy start to the year I'm now back on the land.
It's taken me and a friend a good 2 weeks to clear just some of the driftwood and rubbish that has been washed up. We are also well on our way to finishing the first hut and getting the electricity installed and wired up safely! There are still a mountain of things to do and there never seem enough hours in the day, but we continue to work hard and progress at a typically Thai pace (quite slowly but surely :-).
If anyone wants a fantastic working holiday on the beach in Thailand please contact me (Ethos@rocketmail.com) ASAP so I can make some arrangements. There is a guesthouse down the road that costs only 500 Baht a night and has a hot shower, western toilet, cable TV and a superb restaurant. If you want to stay for longer I can also arrange for a 1 year business visa, so you don't have to do too many border crossings (visa runs). Building/electrical/plumbing skills are obviously an advantage but I had NO experience before I started Ethos and am loving learning everything along the way! So everyone regardless of age and ability are always welcome here to help.
As soon as possible I will have accommodation built on the land, but this takes time and money, and unfortunately I don't have much of either at this point !!
Unfortunately all the information I've already written about my project (Ethos) and what I'm planning to do has been lost/deleted! So over the next month or so I'll rewrite everything and fully explain my vision and my plan for Ethos. This will undoubtedly take longer than hoped for though as I'm the very proud father of a beautiful six week old daughter!
Just keep checking back to see if I've updated it with more information.
Ethos is the name of the project I've started on my land in Ban Thong Krock, Lang Suan, Chumphon. It's located on the mainland in the Gulf of Thailand nearly opposite Koh Tao and Koh Samui.
It's an idea that's grown and developed since I bought the land over 7 years ago. And everybody keeps asking me the same question.
Is it a resort, hotel, commune, guesthouse or homestay?
Labels ! I hate labels. People nowadays always want to put a label on everything and put it in a particular segment or market. I've found the best things in life cannot be forced and shouldn't be labled. They come naturally and evolve and progress in a natural and organic way. This is how Ethos has evolved over time and how I want it to evolve in the future. When a new problem or challenge arises, a solution can always be found, and in this way I believe Ethos will become a place where people from all over the world from totally different backgrounds and cultures will want to meet other like-minded people who share the same vision of how we can all live in harmony with each other and this beautiful planet and create a future where we are dependant not on other people but on ourselves.
In the local area there are a number of children who have access to basic education but their level of English is generally very poor. I want to be able to offer free English lessons to those children who cannot afford to have a private tutor and try to help raise the level of English in the local community.
Helping to educate and help the local community to understand the pressures we put on it with unrestrained and badly planned development and careless disposal of rubbish is another important goal for Ethos. I also want to show the local community that they can create a more beautiful environment whilst at the same time making some extra cash by recycling their rubbish.
Sharing ideas, music, art, martial arts, recipes, teaching tips, parenting advice and inspirational and helpful information is key to helping ourselves and other people grow and evolve more as human and spiritual beings.
Knowledge of any kind that helps people to overcome fears or problems will always be welcomed and encouraged here.
Ethos will be ecologically sensitive as I want it to have as little impact on the local environment as possible, and blend into nature, not sit on it.
Materials will be locally sourced.
It will be built and maintained by me and any other volunteers or friends who come to help.
My goal is to provide as much power and food ourselves as possible, so photovoltaic panels will be installed and we will grow a large selection of organic vegetables and fruit. My plan is to have a fruit and veg border, so guests can take a walk around and pick the fruit and veg they want to eat that day, while also learning about some of the more exotic plants and herbs that grow in Thailand, and the health benefits associated with them.
I also want to build tree houses, a herbal pyramid sauna, a yoga and art studio and have an area where people from all over the world can come and learn how to build their own home or business as well as learning about yoga, meditation, permaculture, carpentry, cooking, art, dance, or anything else that lets people express themselves in a constructive way.
If you know anybody who is connected with anything similar to this or who might be interested in getting involved or helping in any way, please pass on this website.
And most importantly remember : Love to Live - Live to Love.
I welcome feedback so please leave your comments and suggestions below.
